Harper Schmidt Fellows File for Unionization

The Harper Schmidt Fellows, a distinguished group of faculty at the University of Chicago, has filed for an election to create a union through SEIU Faculty Forward. They will be joining other non-tenure track faculty members at the university, who will begin voting in their own election on Friday, November 20th.

“We believe that this is an historic opportunity to demonstrate that the formation of a union can be a collaboration that benefits the entire university community,” the organizing fellows said in an email. “We are an integral part of the intellectual and instructional community within the College, and by forming a strong union our voice can only strengthen the Society of Fellows and the University as a whole.”

The fellows have the backing of the UChicago Graduate Students Union, the American Association of University Professors, the Chicago City Council, and Senator Dick Durbin. Over 100 UChicago tenured faculty have signed a letter to the administration asking that it remain neutral and allow us to make a choice on the question of unionization in an environment free of intimidation and coercion.
